When shopping for a dirt bike or motorcycle, one of the biggest deciding factors is the size and power of an engine. However, more power is not always a good thing. In fact, too much power can actually affect the drivability and comfort of your vehicle and also place you at a greater risk of bodily harm. So before you visit an off-road dealership and buy the biggest dirt bike you can find, consider the following factors to determine how many CCs you really need:
- Your Skill Level- Your riding skill and experience level are the single most important factors in deciding which dirt bike is right for you. A high-displacement engine produces an incredible amount of power and is able to propel the bike at faster speeds. Unless you are an experienced motorcycle rider, this extra power can easily cause the bike to reach speeds that you are not comfortable with or trained to handle. Beginners should look for bikes in the 125cc to 250cc range.
- Your Riding Style- How you plan on using and riding your dirt bike is another important consideration to make when deciding how many CCs you need from your off-road vehicle. If you plan on tackling gnarly trailheads, for example, then you will want to go with a dirt bike that has at least a 250cc engine. Riders who plan on doing hare scramble or enduro racing should look for a larger and more powerful bike. But again, be sure to take your skill level into consideration when making your final decision.
- Your Size- Your physical size is another important factor in deciding how powerful your dirt bike needs to be. For one, high-displacement engines are much larger and heavier than low-displacement engines and require a decent amount of physical strength to control. Additionally, larger engines also require much larger and heavier bikes that can be difficult to control for children and lightweight riders. So unless you are big enough and strong enough to ride a 500cc bike all day, look for a smaller dirt bike that will be easier to handle.

Contrary to what some people believe, off-roading is an activity that can be enjoyed by riders of all ages. But before you head down to the off-road dealership and pick out just any vehicle for your child, make sure that you pick out the right vehicle. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing an off-road vehicle for your child:
- Age- Between dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs, there are a wide number of off-road vehicles to choose from. However, not all of them are appropriate for younger children. The best way to narrow down which vehicles are appropriate for your child is to inform the off-road dealership about the age of your child. The experienced staff member will then show you which vehicles are designed for his or her age range.
- Size- Depending on his or her size, your child may require a smaller or larger off-road vehicle than may be suggested based on his or her age alone. Generally speaking, the taller your child is, the larger his or her off-road vehicle will need to be in order to provide the appropriate level of safety, comfort, and performance.
- Maturity- When shopping for an off-road vehicle, you will need to decide between purchasing a new or used model. If your budget is not an issue, your child’s maturity level may help you decide which option is right. If you think your child is capable of properly caring for an off-road vehicle, then you can feel comfortable investing in a new machine. On the other hand, if you think your child cannot handle the responsibility of owning an off-road vehicle, then you may want to start with a used option.
If you’re looking to get your child involved in the wonderful world of off-roading, Temecula Motorsports can help.
